Uptake and Accumulation of Cadmium and Some Nutrient Ions by Roots and Shoots of Maize (zea Mays L.)

چکیده
The effects of the different concentrations of Cd on accumulation of four cultivars of maize (Zea mays L.) viz., Nongda No. 108, Liyu No. 6, Shendan No. 10 and Tangkang No. 5, were investigated using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The Cd accumulation in the roots and shoots and the interactions among Mn, Fe and Cu were also analyzed in the present study. The concentrations of cadmium chloride (CdCl2 . 2.5 H2O) used were in the range of 10 M to 10 M. The results indicated that the Cd levels in roots and shoots of four cultivars increased significantly (P < 0.005) with increasing Cd concentration. Cadmium ions were concentrated mainly in the roots, and small amounts of Cd were transferred to the shoots. In Liyu No. 6, the distributive levels of Cd in the roots decreased with increasing the concentration of Cd. Liyu No. 6 had more ability to remove Cd from solutions and accumulate it when compared with the other cultivars. This kind of cultivar with many roots, a high biomass and high ability to accumulate Cd can play a very important role in the soil contaminated by Cd.

BACKGROUND: Nutrient management is one of the most important factors that affect the growth and production of maize. OBJECTIVES: Current research was conducted to investigate the effect of Mycorrhizas and vermicompost on seed yield, its components and quantities traits such as concentration of protein, starch, zinc, potassium and nitrogen of corn seed.<br...
متن کاملInfluence of Zinc and Cadmium on Physiological and Biochemical Characteristics of Maize (Zea mays L.)
This research was carried out as pod cultivation to evaluate effect of different level of zinc and cadmium on agro physiological traits of Maize via factorial experiment based on completelly randomized design with three replications along 2012-2013. The factors included different level of Zinc (Zn1=0 or Control, Zn2=15 and Zn3=30 mg.kg-1) and Cadmium (Cd1=0 or control, Cd2=10, Cd3=20 and Cd4=30...
متن کاملEffect of low molecular size humic substances on nitrate uptake and expression of genes involved in nitrate transport in maize (Zea mays L.).
In this study, a detailed characterization of earthworm low molecular size humic substances (LMS) was performed and these substances were used to study their effect on the nitrate influx in roots, tissue nitrate content, and expression of maize genes putatively involved in nitrate uptake in maize (Zea mays L.). The results show that the humic fraction with low molecular size used in this study ...
متن کاملEffects of IDSA, EDDS and EDTA on heavy metals accumulation in hydroponically grown maize (Zea mays, L.).
Heavy metals contamination of soil is a widespread global problem. Chelant assisted phytoextraction has been proposed to improve the efficiency of phytoextraction which involves three subsequent levels: transfer of metals from the bulk soil to the root surfaces, uptake into the roots and translocation to the shoots. However, most studies focused on the first level. A hydroponic experiment, whic...
متن کاملDegree of salt tolerance in some newly developed maize (Zea mays L.) varieties. Maria Zahoor*, Rehana Khaliq, Zafar Ullah Zafar and Habib-ur-Rehman Athar
Salinity is a major abiotic-stress worldwide which decreases crop growth productivity. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether salt stress has adverse effects on growth, photosynthetic efficiency, biochemical properties and nutrient status of maize. An experiment was carried out with seeds of four varieties of maize which were allowed to germinate for one week. Afterwards,...
